On The Basis Of Sex
What’s it about?
Based on the life of US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her fight for gender equality.
What did we think?
Oliver Hetherington-Page says: In the age of the #MeToo movement where the battle of sexes has gained heightened visibility, On The Basis of Sex uniquely demonstrates how much women’s rights have changed in a generation, and how the fight for gender equality continues to be fought on many fronts.
Mimi Leder’s direction is strong if perhaps heavy-handed at times, Felicity Jones is charming as Ginsberg (even if her natural English accent slips through on occasion), while Armie Hammer is funny in the supportive spouse role as Martin. Being the second film based on Ginsberg this year (following the documentary RBG) it is hard not to compare the two; but despite not being as comprehensive as the documentary, On The Basis of Sex has a strong message at its heart that people deserve to hear.
It’s comforting to know as Donald Trump appoints the likes of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court that the Notorious RBG is still fighting the good fight at age 85.
